A public health report released this week found that Mississippi leads the U.S. in obesity and the complete absence of physical activity among adults.
"Physicians know all too well the health behaviors such as poor diet, too little exercise, tobacco use, substance abuse, contribute to heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other fatal conditions. If you don't take care of yourself, your health will go up in smoke," said Dr. Randy Easterling, president of the Mississippi State Medical Association.I suspect that poverty is one important factor here. Poor education is likely another. Could religious doctrines about the relatively low worth of the body vs. the soul be yet another contributing factor?
