As the most religious state in the U.S., Mississippi can certainly be an isolating experience for atheists. But it doesn't have to be. We may not have a central organization at the state level like many other states, but we do have many local atheist groups throughout the state.
In this post, I have attempted to list all the active atheist groups in Mississippi by city and/or county (you can see a map showing the location of the counties here). If I missed any, please let me know so I can add them. Also, if you are a participant of any of these groups and would like me to post a blurb about your group, I'd be happy to do so.
Up in Alcorn County, you'll find the Northeast Mississippi Atheists, Agnostics, and Freethinkers, a community group for non-believers (2014 Update: it is not clear whether this group is still active).
Oxford (Lafayette County)
The University of Mississippi Secular Student Alliance is working on establishing a presence at Ole Miss. I'm not completely sure whether they have been recognized by the university yet, but I'm told they are working on it.
Starkville (Oktibbeha County)
In Starkville, you'll find the Freethinkers, Agnostics, and Atheists of Mississippi State University bringing a dose of reality to their community.
Jackson (Madison, Hinds, and Rankin Counties)
As the largest city in Mississippi, it makes sense that Jackson would not be a bad place to find atheists. The Central Mississippi Atheist Meetup Group is the largest in the state.
Millsaps College, also in Jackson, has the Millsaps Secular Society. Their Facebook group is closed, but they have indicated that they are not only for Millsaps students.
Mississippi's statewide humanist association, the Mississippi Humanist Association, is also based in Jackson.
Hattiesburg (Forrest County)
Until very recently, Hattiesburg was sort of a no-man's land between Jackson and the coast. Despite its size and the presence of one of the larger universities in Mississippi, there was no organized atheist presence. That has changed thanks to the Secular Student Alliance at Southern Miss.
Poplarville (Pearl River County)
The Freethinker's Union at Pearl River Community College may be one of the smaller groups, but they bring some much needed reason to Pearl River County (2014 Update: it is not clear whether this group is still active).
Biloxi and Gulfport (Harrison County)
Those of you in the Gulfport-Biloxi area have access to one of the more active groups in the state in the form of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Atheist and Freethinking Association. And if humanism fits you better than atheism, check out the MS Gulf Coast Humanists.
