We will celebrate DARWIN DAY - with guest speaker Brian Axsmith, Professor of Biology at U of South Alabama. His research interest, local fossil plants from the Pliocene (~ 3 million years ago, a time of extreme global warmth,) is relevant to the prospect that humanity will cause such global climate, irretrievably, for millions of years.

See Sam Singleton, Atheist Evangelist

Sam Singleton, the Atheist Evangelist, will be in Mississippi the afternoon of Sunday, January 9th, following a performance in Metairie, LA.

You can catch Sam's comedy show in Metairie on Friday, January 7th at 7:00 PM at Winston's Pub and Patio. Tickets are only $5.75.

Then you can meet Sam on Sunday, January 9th at 2:00 PM in Gulfport when he joins the Mississippi Gulf Coast Atheist and Freethinking Association for a Sunday social at Harmony Hall. Admission is free, and the social will be followed by the group's regular meeting (3:00 - 5:00 PM) and a potluck supper.

Southeast Regional Atheist Meet

The Southeast Regional Atheist Meet (SERAM) will be held on January 29-30 in Huntsville, Alabama. The event is sponsored by American Atheists and the North Alabama Freethought Association. They are hoping to draw atheists throughout the region.

It looks like seats are limited, so this is probably one you'll want to reserve early. You can find more information here, including scheduled speakers, ticket information, and a tentative schedule.

FFRF Sign Coming to Mississippi Capitol on Monday

I've got some more information to share about the nativity scene in the Mississippi State Capitol and the Freedom From Religion Foundation's response.

The nativity scene appears to still be up, contrary to some rumors floating around about it possibly being taken down. On Monday morning, the nativity scene will get some company in the form of a sign provided by the FFRF and erected by local atheists. The sign is expected to look something like the one pictured here.

If you are in the Jackson area and would like to help with the setup - or just see the sign before it is vandalized - meet at the South entrance to the Capitol on Monday morning a little before 8:30am. And if you do go, please bring a camera and share some pictures with us.

According to Mims, the University of South Alabama is organizing a chapter of the Secular Student Alliance and will be bringing Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta to campus for a talk the evening of September 11. Mims says that additional information is forthcoming but wanted to pass this along now so you can make plans to attend if possible.

Burn the Confederate Flag Day

Efforts are underway by Jesus' General and others to designate September 12, 2010 as Burn the Confederate Flag Day in order to protest the conservative movement's use of racial prejudice for political gain. The date was selected to coincide with the Tea Party's annual event. I probably don't need to tell you why the Confederate flag was selected.

It has been clear to me since moving to Mississippi that this flag has a fairly different meaning here (at least to some White people) than it does in many other regions of the U.S. I have found myself engaged in unexpectedly heated arguments from time to time on the appropriateness of our state maintaining this symbol as part of our state flag. Thus, I would expect that this event will be unlikely to catch on here.

Mississippi Dignity Caravan

On May 22, 2010, a series of rallies against hate and discrimination will be held in Mississippi. According to the organizers' facebook page:

In light of Mississippi's recent negative headlines regarding homophobia, discrimination and the planned presence of Westboro "Baptist Church", we need to take a stand and declare that Mississippians and Americans do not support hate and discrimination... Not in our schools, not in our workplaces, and not in our legislation. This is an issue of human dignity!

That certainly sounds like a worthwhile event for a great cause. The following rallies are planned:

Atheist - Theist Dialogue at the University of New Orleans

An atheist - theist dialogue will be held at the University of New Orleans on April 22, 2010, at 6:30 p.m. titled "Is Religion More a Force for Good or for Evil in the World Today?" It will be held in Kirschman Hall, Lecture Theatre 122 and will involve a two panel discussion including participants such as the UNO Secular Alliance, UNO Campus Freethought Alliance, UNO Baptist Collegiate Ministry, New Orleans Baptist Seminary, etc. The discussion will conclude with an audience Q&A session.

Personhood Mississippi Press Conference Tomorrow

Personhood Mississippi, an activist group opposed to reproductive freedom for women, is planning to hold a press conference tomorrow in Jackson to announce how many signatures they have gathered for the "personhood" amendment they want. Evidently, our Lieutenant Governor Phil Bryant has been working with them to roll back women's rights in Mississippi.

The amendment, if successful, would add the following to Mississippi's constitution:

Section 33. Person defined. As used in this Article III of the state constitution, "The term 'person' or 'persons' shall include every human being from the moment of fertilization, cloning or the functional equivalent thereof." This initiative shall not require any additional revenue for implementation.

The press conference and subsequent "victory rally" are scheduled for 4:00pm tomorrow afternoon at 401 Mississippi Street in Jackson.

Gulf Coast Heart Walk Details

The Gulf Coast Heart Walk is coming up in a little less than two weeks. Here is some additional information about the event, provided by Jennifer Rhodey, Assistant Director of the Greater Southeast Affiliate Gulf Coast Area:

Thank you so much for your participation and support in the Gulf Coast Start! Heart Walk. We are all really excited about this year’s event and we’ve been hearing lots of great things from our teams over the past few days! With the Heart Walk only 2 weeks from this coming Saturday we want to be sure we are sharing as many event details with you as possible. Team Captains, please help us spread the word by sharing this information with any of your team members who we may not have email addresses for!

Hopefully you have heard the news: the 2009 Gulf Coast Start! Heart Walk will take place at the Gulfport VA site! Located on Highway 90 between Courthouse Road and Hewes Avenue, this site enables us to still walk down historic Second Street.

Very limited parking is available onsite so please make plans to carpool with your teammates if you intend to park at the VA. Parking is available in the CTA parking garage located in downtown Gulfport. We will have shuttles running between the garage and the Gulfport VA all morning and we strongly encourage people to park there.

We ask all participants to respect the areas of the VA that are under construction by remaining out of and away from all buildings. Please leave any caution tape/barricades/etc in place; this is there for your safety. As always, pets are not allowed at this event. Please leave your furry friends at home.

Additionally, this year we will not have company signs in the gathering area in front of the stage. As our walk has grown over the years (we’re expecting 7000+ walkers Oct 3rd!!) we have found it increasingly difficult to accommodate that many people safely while also having the signs. We recommend that you make a plan with your teammates before walk day about where and when you will all meet up at the event.

Freethinkers Forum in Hattiesburg

Those of you in the Hattiesburg area who have been wondering why all the action seems to be in Jackson or on the coast finally have a reason to celebrate. There will be a Freethinkers forum at 7 p.m. on Sept. 24 in the Liberal Arts Building, Room 303, at the University of Southern Mississippi's Hattiesburg campus. This forum is held on the fourth Thursday of each month. For details, call (601) 583-1453. I will see if I can find some more information too, but it certainly sounds promising.
